The Current Situation of Idukki Tourism at This over Rainfall

Tourism in the district of Idukki has been affected due to heavy rains and flash floods in the area. The recent rain and over flooding in the Munnar, Peermade, and Adimaly areas are posing a threat to tourism in Idukki. At present, most tourist attractions in Idukki are currently closed to visitors until further notice, including the Neelakurinji gardens in Munnar, Idukki, which tourists have planned to visit. The Neelakurinji is a flower that blooms every 12 years in the Western Ghats. Tourists come to Munnar in droves to see this uncommon flower.  As in the 24 hours between October 16 and 17, the Idukki reservoir, Kerala's highest hydroelectric dam, received over 4.25 feet of water. Officials say this is the first time Idukki has received such a large inflow of water into the dam since the Kerala floods of 2018. Authorities opened three shutters of the Idukki dam in Cheruthoni on October 19th as the water level at the Idukki reservoir approached the red alert level and the IMD (India Meteorological Department) predicted significant rains in Kerala from Wednesday, October 20 Wednesday. As a precaution, 222 people from 64 households living along the banks of the Periyar River have been relocated to safer areas. Authorities have stated that everything was well-planned this time and that there would be no damage as a result of the shutters being opened. While the shutters are open, the public is advised not to enter the river or its streams.

Travelers should take note of this and keep themselves informed about the weather. It is not recommended to travel to the state's affected areas because rural communities are being cut off. Kerala is a renowned tourist destination due to its abundant natural resources. It is, nevertheless, not uncommon for it to become flooded. In 2018, one of the deadliest floods in the state's history struck, killing over 483 people. 34 of the state's 54 dams were opened for the first time that year. However, after the initial panic is over, we may see some good trends in Idukki's tourism economy.
